Writing Mentor

Have you a passion project that’s burning to be written? Is a lack of confidence keeping you stuck? Do you yearn to know more about your craft? Is your soul crying out to write, and you don’t know why but you’re just not doing it?

I’m a critically acclaimed poet with three published collections and an award-winning scriptwriter. I’ve written for TV, theatre, radio and short film. I’ve also had short stories and non fiction pieces published. I know how tough it can be to find your voice. I love to help writers get unstuck and bring their work to the next level. As a mentor I pass on all the knowledge and craft I’ve learned in my career as a writer. I create a safe space where you can be vulnerable, experiment, find your authentic voice, get inspired and grow as a writer.

I love to work with poets and scriptwriters, whether you’re writing for TV, film, theatre or radio. When it comes to fiction, my time as an award-winning scriptwriter and BBC script editor means I’m very strong at unpicking problems with story arcs and character development.

I was a writer for two years on RTE’s flagship drama Fair City, and the award-winning BBCNI teen drama Seacht. I also spent 8 years working as a BBC script editor, 5 years as a freelance journalist, and I have a Masters with Distinction in Creative Writing. I have over 20 years experience as a writing mentor and facilitator. I’m a part-time Lecturer in Creative Writing for Ulster University. You can read my full biog here.

Here’s some feedback from a mentoring client:

‘As a published poet I was keen to find a mentor to improve my writing. I researched people that could provide this service, which led me to contacting Deirdre. I immediately felt listened to and that Deirdre would offer me the professionalism and knowledge that I needed. In the following months my writing evolved considerably, particularly aided by Deirdre’s ability to communicate in a concise and sensitive manner. The technical parts of writing poetry have witnessed the greatest progress whilst working with Deirdre and I feel more confident in my writing than I did previously. I recommend Deirdre, if you want to enhance your writing skills, improve your craft and want a mentor to support you.’ Tony McMahon

I'm a Professional Mentor for the Irish Writers Centre, which offers one-off sessions which you can book here.

I also offer one-to-one mentoring privately over a number of sessions, and you can contact me here or email me on info@deirdrecartmill.com to find out more or to book a call to see how I can help.

I’ll tailor our sessions specifically to your needs. We’ll look at:

  • mentoring you on all aspects of your current projects, from writing to getting your work out there.
  • teaching you craft and technique.
  • looking at your writing habits and routines and making them work for you.
  • provide detailed feedback on your writing.
  • provide structured support for all stages of your writing.
  • provide accountability that will get you writing regularly – you’ll want to write if I’m ready as the reader.

I’ll pass on all the technique, insights and insider information I’ve gathered over the years as both an award-winning writer and during my 8 years as a script editor with the BBC.

I’ve worked with many stigmatised people such as neurodivergent writers, people affected by HIV, survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, recovering addicts, ex combatants, children in care, people with learning disabilities and women on probation. I believe everyone has the right to write, and to have their voice heard.

Whether you’re a new writer or a seasoned professional, my mentoring provides both inspiration and practical guidance that will rekindle the flame within you, and fire you up to get writing and keep writing.
